3D Printed Miniature Model: Ocean Park's "Hair Raiser"

We were recently invited by Ocean Park to collaborate on a special project: creating a detailed, 3D-printed miniature model of their flagship ride, 'Hair Raiser,' for educational purposes. As native Hong Kongers, this project was particularly meaningful to our team. The 'Hair Raiser' is not just one of Hong Kong's premier tourist attractions; it's a part of our collective childhood memories.

3D Modeling from Photographs Alone

The primary challenge of this project was the complete absence of design drawings or reference models. To recreate every detail of the 'Hair Raiser,' our team conducted on-site research at Ocean Park. We meticulously captured the roller coaster's complex track structure and train design through an extensive series of high-definition photographs. The process was a true test of our team's observation skills, patience, and professional expertise.

Embodying the Spirit of Craftsmanship

1)Precise 3D Modeling

Our experienced designers used professional SolidWorks software to transform the 2D photographs into a precise 3D model. Every element, from the roller coaster's track geometry to the proportions of the seats and even the over-the-shoulder restraints, underwent rigorous comparison and correction. As is our standard practice, we provided the client with the complete 3D file for final approval before printing, ensuring the design perfectly aligned with their requirements.

2)High-Precision DLP 3D Printing

Given the model's intricate details and extremely high precision requirements, we selected top-of-the-line DLP 3D printing technology, paired with PAT10 resin—a material known for its exceptional dimensional stability and performance. This combination is ideal for creating complex miniatures, perfectly rendering the smallest features and ensuring that even the most delicate parts are clearly defined.

3)Professional Post-Processing and Colouring

After printing, a meticulous post-processing procedure began. Our technicians carefully removed the printing supports, then professionally cleaned and post-cured the model to maximise its structural strength and durability. Next, the model's surface was painstakingly sanded to achieve a smooth, refined texture. Finally, referring to the on-site photographs, our painting experts expertly hand-painted the roller coaster tracks and seats, bringing the 3D-printed miniature model to life.

4)Ingenious Assembly Design

Considering this miniature model would be used for educational purposes, interactivity was a key design goal. In addition to creating movable safety restraints on the seats, we ingeniously incorporated magnetic elements. This design allows instructors to easily disassemble key components during lessons, giving students a clearer understanding of the ride's mechanics and structure. This feature greatly enhances the model's interactivity and educational value.

A Meaningful Collaboration

We sincerely thank Ocean Park for their trust and for the invitation to collaborate. It was a privilege to contribute our expertise to a place that has brought so much joy to our community. Creating this 3D-printed miniature model of the 'Hair Raiser' was a truly meaningful experience.

We firmly believe that 3D printing is not just a technology, but a medium for preserving memories and passing on culture. We hope to have more opportunities in the future to use 3D printing technology to capture and preserve the memorable sights of Hong Kong for everyone to cherish.
